Quack Like a Duck

James and Louisa spent a fun morning feeding the ducks at Sugarhouse Park. Jamsie is 100% boy: non-stop and not at all afraid of the ducks. He ran through them, around them and after them. Louisa (typically a no-fear child) became a bit more intimidated when a large goose snatched a piece of bread right out of her hands!

It has been a beautiful day... we hope this weather continues through the Halloween festivities tonight!

Overheard...

Yesterday in Church I was telling Louisa - in very simple form - some of the miracles of Jesus: the curing of the lepers, the raising of the widow's son, and the healing of the man born blind. I told her of the woman who had bled for twelve years and no one could help her - except Jesus. Louisa immediately said, "Did Jesus have a bandaid?"

Sensible Child

Ella earned her first dollar today, by "babysitting" Louisa while I ran on the treadmill. She spent quite a bit of time determining where to store the crisp bill, and then remarked, "I want this money to go toward my education."

Yah, Yah

Louisa enjoyed a fun playdate this morning with her good friend Andrew. Andrew and Louisa played together a lot as they were both learning to talk (a little more than a year ago). At that time, Andrew could not say "Weesa", so instead he called her "Yah Yah". Soon, Louisa endearingly referred to Andrew by the same name. And the nickname sticks! It was great to enjoy some time with this sweet boy -- our friend Yah Yah -- today.

All Girl

Cleaning out files today, I found this note from our remodel (dictated by Ella):

Ideas for Ella's Room --
Nightstand - white, with chandelier lamp - pink
Desk to fit in corner - pink
Streamers all around hanging from the ceiling and from the curtains
Pretty Bed - make it beautiful

And for the actual room:
It is filled with art from my childhood bedroom and antiques from my Grandmother Dalton's home: a drop-leaf bedside table that was her kitchen table for many years, a needlepoint bench made by my Grandma, and a combination piece of furniture (not pictured) that functions as a bookcase/secretary/dresser and vanity!

My Grandmother Jessie Johnson Dalton was an elegant lady -an actress, musician and poet - who brought many elements of culture and beauty to Springville, Utah. Ella is, in many ways, much like her Great-Grandma, so I find it fitting that her bedroom be filled with reminders of this amazing woman.

On the Road Again

In a quest for better health, I'm getting back into running. It has been a slow process, but I'm starting to pick up speed and gain greater endurance. I think about all kinds of crazy things while on the road, or on the treadmill. Things that seem like epiphanies while running, but are actually rather odd when I slow down and take a big breath. This morning, while thinking about who I want to be when I grow up, my mind brought me back to this classic advertisement by Nike (double-click on it for an extra good view).

Louisa Kate

Colored her palms smurf blue a few days ago (we're still scrubbing). Asking nonstop for Bubble Tape to put in her "hold cuppers" today. Constantly jumping (on the ground and off tall things). Insisted, for a few days, on only being called "Weesy." Happy almost continuously. Loves her bed and naps. Says, "please" and "thank you." Cutest little kitty cat. Eats her vegetables (and most everything else).

What more could a mom want? I just love this kid so much!

Remembering Eliza

We remember our baby Eliza today, on her heavenly birthday. It has been 9 years since we held our precious girl. Yet almost daily we feel her influence in our lives. Her life (and death) provide us with perspective that perhaps we could not have obtained in any other way. When Eliza stopped living, I felt like a large part of me died with her. With the perspective of years, I now feel that knowing her greatly enriches my life.

Helen Keller taught, “The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse.”

Recently we placed a wreath upon Eliza’s grave. And while at the cemetery Ella scolded us (with her wise beyond years wisdom) for calling it a “grave”. She remarked: “It is not her grave, it is a door!” Perhaps it is a door: and God comes into our lives through the struggles and the triumphs of life. God comes through that door in the blessings and in the celebrations, and also in the moments of sadness and weakness. I turn today to God--with great thanks for the joys of life--foremost being my husband and daughters and the great love we share.

New Heights

With a face this animated, Ella had to be "up" to something...
Later in the day, I found she was practicing her climbing skills for one purpose. To summit the fridge. Anything for a thrill (...or a waterbottle)!

Sunday, Sunday

We seem to display a lot of pictures of us camping, in swimsuits or waterskiing on this blog. To balance things out, here are a few of the family in our Sunday "best."
